Do's and Don'ts at the start of your care

51

A question I hear often when you have just started care with us, is ‘What should I be doing and what shouldn’t I be doing?’

Although this may be different for each person, there are some general do’s and don’ts.

When it comes to exercise, it might be that you are chomping at the bit to get back going again. The main concern here is that your body needs time to realign and become more mobile before strengthening your body. After all, you don’t want to strengthen a wonky structure!

But what can you do? Stretching, yoga and Pilates can really help you and your bodies progress at this point. Getting out and about for a short walk (try and keep it on the flat if you’re finding walking challenging!) to keep your body moving.

Once you start to see consistent improvement, this is when you can start to get back into your exercises at the gym – keeping it to body weight only initially and gently increasing the weight as your body adapts.

With any exercise, please be careful. If your exercise increases your pain or doesn’t feel right, then you should stop and chat with me (Laura) at your next appointment.

My final ‘do’s’ are about improving your bodies health and ability to heal – prioritising your sleep will help your body heal quicker (I mentioned the importance of sleep at your Introduction). Eating nourishing food to help your body recover is also really important. Think about how much better your body will heal and function eating fresh fruit and veg compared to a snickers bar (no judgement if you have an occasional cheeky snickers bar, we all do!). And drinking plenty of water is also super beneficial.

I hope you have found this helpful and if you have any questions, please ask!
